TOOLKIT: TACTICAL URBANISM

What is Tactical urbanism?

Tactical Urbanism includes low-cost, temporary changes to the built environment, usually in cities, intended to improve local neighborhoods and city gathering places. Tactical urbanism is also commonly referred to as guerrilla urbanism, pop-up urbanism, city repair, or D.I.Y. urbanism.

You can do lots of different tactical urbanism projects that create plazas or parklets, but here we are focusing on bicycle related projects. Simple bicycle tactical urbanism projects could include taking a standard bicycle lane and making it a protected bicycle lane, create bulb-outs at an intersection with hay bales or pavement art. (Bulb-outs are a traffic calming measure which narrows the road. Bulb-outs reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and increase their visibility while slowing down approaching automobiles.)
