Education
We empower the community through bicycle education
For children and adults, bicycling is a source of freedom that facilitates improved mental health and happiness. Bicycling is a prosocial form of transportation that allows us to deepen ties to our community as we move through it—seeing the world around us more intimately and serendipitously encountering friends along our route. Our efforts focus on lowering barriers to entry related to safety education, bike maintenance, and providing safe, fun, riding opportunities.
How We Educate
Safe Routes to School Safety Assessments
Analyzing the school boundary area using GIS data and the lived experience of community members to help schools find or create safer walking and biking routes
Bike Safety Training
Using our fleet of 40 bikes, safety training includes 2-4 days of classroom and on-bike education for 4th-6th grade students
Repair Education Events
A bike rack workshop teaches participants how to install bike racks to create more bike-friendly spaces.
Below are examples of how we educate the community. Didn’t see what you are looking for? If you have an idea or a request, let us know in the form below!

COUNTIES
Bike Utah’s education program began in 2016, serving elementary school students with our Bicycle Education Safety Training curriculum. Since then, we have reached 38,000 students at 114 schools in 16 counties. In 2023, we expanded our education offerings to people of all ages with the addition of a Bike Friendly Driving module in Utah's online driver's education program, commuter education courses, and more.
STUDENT DRIVERS TAUGHT A YEAR
Bicycle Friendly Driving
To develop a culture of safe cycling, we also educate young drivers on how to drive around bikes to keep riders safe. Our Bicycle Friendly Driving presentation is a mandatory part of Utah’s online driver’s education program, reaching approximately 14,000 aspiring drivers every year.
Partner Program Development
Tracy Aviary
In 2024-2025, Bike Utah is delighted to support Tracy Aviary’s work combining bike safety and rides in nature along the Jordan River Trail for South Salt Lake’s youth. We are providing a fleet of bikes, repair supplies, curriculum development assistance, and staff training on education and repair techniques. Bike Utah also supported the Aviary’s application for a UCORE grant to gain access to additional resources.
Salt Lake City
In 2024, Bike Utah partnered with Salt Lake City to develop an ebike commuter presentation that helped recipients of the city's ebike voucher program learn to commute comfortably on their new bikes. The class taught new riders the basics of preparing for a ride, locking up their bikes, safety precautions, route choice, and how to ride in the street.
North Sanpete Middle School
In 2023, Bike Utah provided support to North Sanpete Middle School in their successful application to receive a Specialized Outride Riding For Focus grant to start a middle school cycling program.
