Learn to ride a bike!

Are you just starting out or teaching someone to ride? This is the place for helpful information to get you rolling.

Bicycle Basics

Practice getting on and off the bicycle: If this is the student’s first time attempting to ride a bicycle have the student practice getting on and off several times until they are comfortable.

Pedal Awareness: While the student is on the bicycle place your hands firmly on the handlebars. Have the student look ahead and avoid looking at their feet; instruct them to put both feet on their pedals when you say “hot lava.” Repeat the exercise several times.

Leaning: For this exercise, the student will remain on the bicycle while you securely hold on to the handlebars and keep the front tire firmly in between your legs. Have the student place both feet on the pedals and lean the bicycle side to side to familiarize the student with learning.

Learn to scoot and glide

Hops: Familiarize students with gliding by encouraging them to use their feet at the same time to push the bicycle.

Bouncy house: Avoid students shuffling their feet by encouraging students on their bicycles to take long steps as they would walking inside a bouncy house.

Practice gliding

Timed glide: Have your student practice gliding by timing how long they can glide. Count to 10 and see if the student can glide with feet up for the full 10 seconds. Gradually add more time as they gain confidence.

Steering and turning while gliding

Easy obstacle course: Set up cones in a line with space in between each cone.

Play “follow the leader”: Get on your bicycle and have the student follow you. Allow for the student to go at their pace and then gradually begin to go faster.
